Why join Beta Beavers as a routesetter?

5 Reasons to join us

  • Being part of an association gives routesetters official recognition for their skills and experience, enhancing their professional credibility. This can lead to better job opportunities and higher pay.

The association can also help routesetters develop their skills further by offering access to certification programs, advanced training, and learning resources.

  • Routesetters who are members of the association will have access to a broader network of climbing gyms and related businesses. This can lead to more consistent freelance or part-time work opportunities across multiple locations.

The association can function as a central hub where gyms and events can seek routesetters, making it easier for members to find work.

  • An association provides a collective voice for routesetters to negotiate better working conditions, pay rates, and safety regulations. It can advocate for fair compensation and ensure that routesetters are treated professionally across different venues.

It can also offer legal and administrative support to its members, ensuring that contracts are fair and working conditions meet industry standards.

  • An association creates a community of like-minded professionals who can share ideas, collaborate on projects, and learn from each other. This fosters creativity and helps develop better routes.

Additionally, routesetters can engage in mentorship programs where experienced members guide newer ones, enhancing the overall skill level within the profession.

  • By working within the association, routesetters will contribute to their OASI insurance (AVS in French, AHV in German). This is money that they will have access to after retiring, which independent routesetters can’t contribute towards, and won’t have access to. As a heads up, we will first need you to show you’re available for regular setting before we make the administrative paperwork for AVS registration.

Application Requirements

Setting experience

We’re looking for setters with some years of regular paid route setting experience. It’s also a plus if you’ve set in multiple gyms before.

Accreditations / Diplomas

Following route setting courses teaches a standardized understanding of setting, which we value. If you haven’t followed any courses before, we would then ask you to add recommendation letters from two setters or gym owners.

Setting Portfolio

Please submit a route setting portfolio, showcasing your experience and some of the sets you’re most proud of.

We review every application on a case-by-case standard. If you’re missing some of the application requirements, please still apply. We will then let you know what’s the best way to fulfill those missing criteria.

What do we Expect from you?

  • Teamwork

It’s easy to miss something or get stuck with an idea when setting alone. thus, you’ll never set by yourself at Beta Beavers. You will always set together with at least one other setter; and it’s key for us that you get along with others.

  • Safety

We want to profesionalize route setting and offer a service that climbing gyms can trust. This starts by setting safe boulders, setting with adequate equipment (glasses, trousers, shoes etc), and testing boulders safely (safe landing, far from ladders etc).

  • Open Mind

We expect you to be open-minded and willing to change your boulders. You must be open to criticism, and not take those personally. It’s also important that you put effort into offering constructive feedback to your co-setter and their boulders.
